Free and funded AI training in North Wales: what is actually out there
You do not have to pay full price to get your team trained on AI in North Wales. Between funded programmes and free sessions there is more available than most owners realise, and some of it is genuinely good.
Most business owners in North Wales assume AI training means paying a consultancy several thousand pounds for a day. That is one option. It is not the only one, and for a lot of businesses it is not the sensible first one.
There is a reasonable amount of free and subsidised training in this region at the moment, largely because the Welsh Government put money behind SME AI adoption in January and because North Wales is now an AI Growth Zone. This is a good moment to take advantage of that.
Business Wales
The obvious starting point and the one most owners skip. Business Wales received £600,000 of the Welsh Government's £2.1 million AI package specifically to build an AI awareness and adoption programme for micro and small businesses.
In practice that means webinars, in-person events and adviser time, free at the point of use. The events finder on the Business Wales site is where these are listed, and it is worth setting a reminder to check it monthly rather than hoping something reaches you.
The quality varies, as you would expect from anything free and general. The introductory sessions are genuinely useful if you are starting from nothing. If you already use AI daily, you will find them slow.
M-SParc
Wales's first science park, based at Gaerwen on Anglesey, with On Tour hubs currently in Bangor and Pwllheli. They run AI workshops and business support, and they are building a second building on the site to add more training and event space.
For businesses in the north west of the region this is the most practical door to knock on, and you do not need to be a technology company to use them. They have also been involved in Bangor University research into how Welsh SMEs actually use generative AI, which means the people there are working from evidence rather than sales material.
The Flexible Skills Programme
This is where the money is if you want proper accredited training rather than an introductory session.
The FSP contributes towards accredited training for staff at Wales-based businesses, at 50% of costs up to £50,000 per application. The January AI announcement indicated the employer contribution drops to 25% for AI courses specifically. The general guidance still quotes the flat 50% rate, so ask Business Wales which applies to your course before booking.
You need three things: the business based in Wales and solvent, training that is accredited or to a recognised industry standard, and a genuine commitment to release staff to complete it. Universities and colleges
Wrexham University has run skills vouchers of up to £1,500 per company towards CPD, plus knowledge transfer vouchers worth £500 each for bringing in academic expertise, covering Wrexham, Denbighshire and Flintshire. Confirm the current position, as the funding behind these has been shifting.
Bangor University and the region's further education colleges run digital and business courses that periodically include AI content. Worth a direct enquiry rather than waiting for it to be advertised.
The free training nobody counts
Two things worth saying, because they are better than their price suggests.
The tool makers' own material. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all publish free guidance on using their products properly. It is well made and it is specific to the tool you are actually using, which most general training is not.
An hour a week of deliberate practice. The single most effective AI training for a small business owner is using it on a real task, weekly, and saving what works. No course substitutes for this, and doing a course without it is largely wasted money. The 30-day plan sets out how to structure it.
Which to choose
Roughly, by where you are starting from.
- Never used it. A free Business Wales session, then an hour a week on one real task.
- Using it a bit, want your team on board. M-SParc or a Business Wales workshop, plus business-tier accounts so people are not on personal logins.
- Using it well, need specific skills. Flexible Skills Programme funding against accredited training for the particular gap you have found.
- Need it applied to your actual processes. This is where general training stops helping and consultancy starts, whether from us or anyone else.
The mistake worth avoiding is booking training before you know what you need. Businesses that use AI for a month first, then get trained on the specific thing they got stuck on, get considerably more out of the same day than businesses that book a general course and hope.
